2008 Year in Review and Looking Ahead to 2009
In 2009, we hope to build on the successes of 2008.
During 2008, we focused on low cost, labor intensive and
highly visible things to help improve the community. We
were very pleased with the support and participation of
other community groups.
On April 12th, we held a ballroom dinner dance as a
fundraiser and introduced the new Clarion River Jazz
Octet to the community.
In June - August, we held several planning and work days
in cooperation with the Clarion County Garden Club,
Civic Club and Nate Minich Landscaping. We were able to
renovate the garden areas at the Broad Street entrance
to the municipal parking lot. With cooperation and
funding from the Clarion County tourism promotion agency
and artist Steve Jaworski, we were able to get our
Peanut Butter Bear repainted so it looked shiny and
great for the Peanut Butter Festival in September. In
August, Renaissance members joined with local churches,
including First Church of God and Cornerstone Church of
God, and other volunteers on a clean up day involving
more than 40 people. In Gumtown Park, we cleaned and
stained benches and cut brush. It looked beautiful for
the Peanut Butter Festival. Crews also painted trash
cans, weeded the garden in the parklet and other areas,
picked up litter and did a major brush removal job at
the New Bethlehem/South Bethlehem elementary school.
Dogipot stations for dog owners to use to pick up their
dog’s waste were purchased and will be going up after
the Spring thaw.
In November, we presented graduation project ideas that
would benefit the community to the Redbank Valley high
school students. The list is now on the website.
We found some Season’s Greetings banners purchased years
ago by the Women’s Business Association that had been
left in a storeroom, got them cleaned and worked with
the Chamber and Bill Reddinger to get them up on the
light poles. We’re now working on banners to fit the
irregular size poles for other seasons. We’ve also been
able to get some vacant store fronts decorated.
After our 2nd successful annual arts and crafts show on
the 1st Saturday in December, we’re laying the ground
work for an artists’ cooperative. The talent in the area
is amazing. Despite the very cold weather and snow, the
show and Christmas Home Tour on Dec. 6th, were
successful events that brought in a lot of people.
In 2009, we hope to work on more visible improvements
and to get the façade improvement program going to
address the "Catch 22" of improving existing businesses
and drawing in new businesses when store fronts aren’t
as attractive as they could be. An improved appearance
increased store sales in the next year after
improvements by 25 – 50 % in Ridgway. We hope to do the
same or better. The Board members and Committees
continue to attend programs, network, meet and work on a
variety of projects. More help and ideas are always
appreciated! Together we can make a difference in 2009
and beyond. Thank you for your support!
